Getting HVAC ready for the future

Addressing skills shortages in building services, and the latest initiatives to create a new pipeline of talent into the heating and ventilation industries, are just two of the big issues to be explored this October at HVAC 2018.  The show is dedicated to heating, ventilation and air conditioning in the built environment and returns to the NEC from 9 to 11 October as part of the construction industry’s largest event, UK Construction Week (UKCW).  The show will also explore the latest technical developments, including expert seminars on topics such as fuel cell and AC systems, as well as workshops giving business and marketing tips on search engine optimisation and business change programmes.

 

An impressive line-up of speakers includes Douglas Drewniak who leads Bioregional’s drive for truly sustainable, energy efficient buildings, and Martin Calvert, marketing director at specialist digital agency Blueclaw.

HVAC 2018 will also give engineers and installers the opportunity to invest in professional development through free CPD sessions.

This year’s packed CPD programme covers installation, building regulations and building materials, construction up-skilling, energy management, Brexit and changing regulations, environmental issues, building performance and building materials, plus much more.

Sessions will also cover broader topics such as mental health and wellbeing. Exhibitors will deliver the CPD sessions, so there will be the chance to continue the conversation after each workshop.

The ‘Future of Construction’ is UKCW’s theme for 2018 which will explore the latest innovative ideas, products and systems throughout the event.

This year also sees the launch of the UKCW Role Models Campaign to champion the existing talent in the industry and to inspire the next generation.

Role models are taking part in an outreach programme, going to colleges and schools in the coming months to talk to students and teachers at key stages of their education to explain what inspired them to choose construction as a career and to bust any myths around the image of construction.

37 inspiring men and women have recently been shortlisted for this campaign, including Lisa Pogson, joint managing director of Airmaster Air Conditioning Ltd. The overall Role Model of the Year will be announced on 10 October.

Debates on major national and international construction issues will take place on the UKCW Stage. Speakers already confirmed include Phil Wilbraham, expansion programme director at Heathrow; Bridget Rosewell OBE, commissioner at the National Infrastructure Commission; Ben Derbyshire, RIBA president; and Ruth Davidson, National Housing Federation executive director.

Other attractions for visitors include the Beer & Ale Festival with hot food and live entertainment, and a chance to celebrate with the Construction Enquirer Awards.

Last year was UKCW’s most successful yet with more than 30,000 trade visitors. This year is set to be even bigger with a forecast of 35,000 visitors.
